WICKED NEWS

Shoshana Bean and Megan Hilty — who have played the roles of Elphaba and Glinda, respectively, in the Broadway company of Wicked — will reunite this fall for three stops of the hit musical's national tour. Bean and Hilty will head the cast of the Wicked tour when it plays Portland, OR; Seattle, WA; and Toronto, Canada. Bean, it should be noted, is a Portland-area native, and Hilty hails from Seattle. Wicked will play Portland's Keller Auditorium Sept. 6-17, Seattle's Paramount Theatre Sept. 20-Oct. 1 and Toronto's Canon Theatre Oct. 6-Nov. 26. The latter is a return engagement for the Stephen Schwartz musical.

A preview performance of London's Wicked, which begins its run Sept. 7 at the Apollo Victoria Theatre, will benefit the Elton John AIDS Foundation. Proceeds from the Sept. 19 performance will be donated to the non-profit organization, which has assisted over 12 million people affected by HIV/AIDS. Tickets for the 7:30 PM performance are priced £75 (call 0870 4000 751) or £250 (includes post-show supper; call 020 7348 4840). Wicked — co-starring Idina Menzel as Elphaba and Helen Dallimore as Glinda — will officially open in the West End Sept. 27.

The open-ended Chicago production of Wicked will celebrate its first anniversary in the Windy City with a public celebration at Water Tower Square Park. The June 20 festivities will kick off at 12:30 PM and will feature a sing-along led by cast members of the Schwartz-Winnie Holzman musical. Wicked fans will be able to join the show's current Elphaba, Kristy Cates, in a sing-along version of the show's anthem, "Defying Gravity." Attendees are also invited to attend the celebration dressed as Elphaba, the not-so-Wicked Witch of the West. The first 365 witches — Wickedly dressed and fully greenified — will be given a pair of tickets to a future Wicked performance. The Water Tower Square Park is located at the corner of Michigan and Pearson.

(lol, I promise, this will be my last post for a while! Unless I win the ticket lotto tomorrow...)

I saw the evening show of the tour in Detroit on Friday.

I had awesome seats (limited view, but believe me, I'm not too torn up about not being able to see half of Boq during MOTWH or missing three seconds of Glinda during one scene.) and... stuff. Anyway!

Notable things:

Read more...Collapse )

We got to go to the stagedoor for the first time! It was really fun, and it was the first play I've gone to where the stagedoor is marked and has people there for the purpose of ... well, security? I guess.

I got Chistery's signature without realising it... LOL. I just remembered screaming for him extra loud during the curtain call (he had a monkey costume, I didn't.. make the connection) so I got his signature, and asked if he was a monkey, and lo and behold, he was Chistery! Yay.

Kendra is so adorable... she had her dog with her, in her purse. lol. Reallllly glad it's a friendly dog, because people just kept petting it without permission. (I'm betting she's probably tired of people going, "HAHAHAHA IS HIS NAME DODO!!!")

Alma (morrible) had a dog too. So cute! I wanted to get two playbills with her signature, because my friend loves her in Titanic, but a girl rushed in when I was asking with, "UGH. CAN I GET ANOTHER PICTURE OF YOU??? THIS GIRL (me) WAS IN THE SHOT." and I saw Victoria, so I decided to let it go.

I wanted to get Maria (elphie u/s) signature, but I didn't recognise her, so I missed her. Anyway, I told Victoria that I saw her on Sunday, and that I loved her as Elphaba, and that I thought she owned every single song. lol. A bit of a fan, I am. She has one of the three legible signatures that I got last night... :P

Umm... so, I know this is a SHOCKER - but as soon as Sebastian came out, it was like this rush of giggling girls (ages 10-60!) rushed up. I was right there, so I got his signature quick. He said "hi" and I said something along the lines of, "Um hi you umm *giggle* were really good you sing... umm... pretty.."

So, all in all, it was really fun. I might be trying the lotto tomorrow, but only if I can find a ride. If not, this was my last Wicked experience! (Unless I go to New York next year... doubt it, but at least I saw it with a really great cast.)

(posting too much!)

I was wondering if anyone knew the rules for the Masonic Temple (detroit) Wicked ticket lottery?

My friend won yesterday and they're front row seats (I thought they were nosebleed balcony) and now I'm desperate to drive the 2 hours down there again. Well, have someone else drive the 2 hours down there... again...

Thanks!

I went to the tour matinee today...

*SPAZ*

I saw Victoria Matlock as Elphaba -- quick recap, on opening night, my friends and I talked to her for a bit and got her signature, saying 'just in case we see you as Elphie!' -- so basically, I saw her name on the board and FREAKED OUT. (and called my friends, who freaked out.)

In my opinion:

She was way better as Elphaba than Julia Murney. I mean. Wow. It's hard to even compare. Julia hit the notes, has a rich voice and can add her own version to the songs... but... oh my lord. Victoria took the notes, hit them, then threw them out the window and owned every. single. song.

I'm seeing it again on Friday night (haha I'm spoiled) and I'm prayin praying PRAYING that I see Victoria again. I doubt I will. If I don't, at least I got to see her this once. I don't get why she's the standby, I hope she gets to be the "real" Elphaba in some production, because she deserves it.

I'm not reviewing the whole show 'cause... basically, everyone was amazingly awesome. (One note, the ensemble seemed a lot quieter today? Mic problems or just tired?)

Hey guys! So I decided to create a Wicked Blog Ring for LJ. :D

In short, a blog ring is a list of blogs (or LJs in this case) with something in common (a love for Wicked!). You will recieve a button with a name on it of your choice and you use that to link to the main blog ring page so that others can see the members of the blog ring (or join it themselves).

So, I saw the Matinee in Detroit today with the full cast. I've seen the show before two times, and I must say that unfortuantly today was not my favorite. Let's start at the beginning...
Every other time I have seen Wicked I was instantly, as soon as NOMTW started thrilled and blown away. That was not the case today. The sound system sounded quiet and the monkeys did not have a lot of energy. The ensemble did as well as could be expected and Kendra came down in the bubble. She got absolutly no applause and I felt bad, however she did not prove herself very worthy in NOMTW. Her high notes, hell most of her notes were very quiet and could hardly be heard over the ensemble. She got no laughs during her punch lines and didn't really seem to have the character down very well.
Then DOS began. Julia came out and got appluase but little (the audiance was really dead..). Kendra came out and got some laughs for the suitcase thing. Alma came and did well. Nothing special. Carole WAS Madame Morrible and I can't really see anyone else in the part and love them like I did her. But at least she SANG in TWAI and didn't just speak it. Meanwhile, Julia, who is apparently indeed sick, did not do her best at all in TWAI. I really would have at that point rathered an understudy. Her acting was great but those higher notes at the end hurt pretty bad. I think I actually heard flem raising out of her throat. But, that is of course not her fault. At least she made an effort.
What is the Feeling was okay. Julia's singing really wasn't doing so great and I don't really see that much chemistry between her and Kendra. Both were still quiet, so it may have just been the sound system.
K. Todd was ok as Dillamond. Nothing special. Personally I just love this scene but he was really gave nothing to the character. Nothing much to say about this scene.
Fiyero's entrance. Sebastion is CLEARLY the most stand outish star in the show. He is, first and foremost, the best Fiyero I have seen. Second of all, his voice is great and acting is amazing. He had the character down pat. The part of DTL where Galinda finds the witch hat had Kendra in a bit of a tizzy. She came out with only one shoe on and was just limping and holding the other. It did kind of add to the comedy of the scene though. She just hopped right off after heh. I do, if anything, LOVE Julia's "Elphie Dance." It's a little bit of a mixture between the robot and the regular dance. Loved it!
Popular was also a highlight of the show! Kendra, although she may lack other galinda-esque qualities, can pull off one HELL of a Popular. Her scene before it was great. The line where she says "That may be your secret but that doesnt make it true" was followed by her going "poof!" and moving her hands all around. It was cute. And her hair toss was great. Probably the one time in the show where I felt some chemistry between the leading ladies. Poor Julia almost fell off the freaking bed! hehe. When Julia ran off after, Kendra did the look in the mirror and "HELLO!" , which I love, and pulled her dress ALL the way up and whispered excitingly "SPARKLE!" as she jumped on the bed and ended the song. Once again, LOVE IT!
So, Elphie's galindafication meets Fiyero scene was funny. Sebastion's hair flip = priceless! He really is amazing. Once again, the Dillamond scene didn't do that much for me. Kinda boring.
The scene before INTG was nice. I definitely felt the chemistry between Julia and Sebastion. I think Sebastion is one of those people who can just get chemistry with almost anyone. I liked Julia's INTG. You really don't hear about this song too much anymore these days but I think it's so well written and very sentimental. Anyway, I digress. The Morrible scene afterward didn't do very much for me. Once again, Carole spoiled me.
The train station scene was different. Boq didn't come out with Nessa and wasn't in the scene at all. When Galinda says "Oh Biq will take care of her" or whatever that line is Nessa just said "Its Boq!" and wheeled herself offstage. I'm interested to know what happened there... Nothing too mich happened in OSD. Good song.. That's about it.
The first Wizard scene was good. P.J. kind of reminds me of a bigger version of Joel based on looks, but I never say Joel perform so I'm not sure performance-wise. P.J. was good though. Probably my second favorite, although the audiance's applause didn't necessarily agree. Ehh.. The monkey spell was cool. I was at partial view so couldn't see the whole monkey thing but that was pretty much the whole thing throughout the show I didn't see, besides some minor entrances.
Defying Gravity. One way to explain it is interesting. It started out well. Julia's acting is definitely on, her voice just wasn't doing well. This was the one scene that Alma really impressed me with. I thought her speech was amazing. Her "Wicked Witch" freaked the crap out of me! hah. The rest of it basically just happened. As the flying part got closer I became a little nervous for Julia. Her "It's me" was surprisingly smooth. I thought we might just do it... and then she kept going. The part that really scared me was the last chorus and I had a right to be. Her voice began really letting out and the flemy thing started getting increasingly worse. She tried a few different things to try to ease it up. Maybe for someone knowing what was happening from experiance with the show it was more apparent, but I really felt for her. It wasn't quite as bad as Idina on 6/13/04 (at least she didnt make it as noticable) but definitely came pretty dang close. But the lights went out and she got applause GALORE! So, it all turned out ok I guess. Someone even told me they loved her voice. Who'd of thought.. Oh and by the way. Since seeing the cherry picker video and finding out how the flying takes place I was trying to forget it and everything but unfortunately it totally ruined this scene for me. It just doesn't have the same effect because know I'm like looking for it. However, since I was farther away it was cool because I noticed that the cherry pickers fabric is designed to make it look like she is just hanging by the broom coming out of the fabric. Hard to explain what I mean, and most of you probably already knew, but it was cool to me. lol.

ACT 2:
Lights went out again and people took forever to shut up but they finally did and twas nice. The scene started well. Thank Goodness was never one of my favorites altogether but I do enjoy Glinda's solo part. Kendra seemed to be a little sick as well because she kept having to clear her throat. She took some time when she didnt have a line to start coughing a bit. Then at the end of her solo when she sings "Happy is what happens when all your dreams come.." and she was about to sing true but since the chorus was coming in she just did a real quick head turn and coughed a little. I found it funny. I dunno..
Jennifer Waldman is a really good Nessa. She played the character very open ended. I liked her vulnerability which I feel many other Nessa's lack. She had a really great voice during WWOTE and it was a little relieving and I would like to hear more of her in the future.
Wonderful was good. Nothing too special. I thought this was the song that best highlighted Julia's voice unfortunately. Just that one line "it does sound wonderful" ironically DID sound wonderful. The little reunion was nice and Sebastion was very convincing. Kendra's INTGr was good. Not a great song in my opinion.
ALAYM really disappointed me. I expected Sebastion and Julia to have this amazing chemistry that was like really watchable but eventually it just became a little boring. They just looked at eachother the whole time. The basically played by the choreography instead of having any fun with the scene. When I saw the tour before with Derrick and SJB they were intense and passionate and I was expecting Julia and Sebastion to be even more so but it just didn't happen. It was sung very well though. On both parts.
The witch fiight scene was probably one of the best. Julia and Kendra really did well with that one. Julia's cackle was weak but kind of convincing since she had the whole sick thing going for her. Really helped in my opinion. The "come and go by bubble" crack got a lot of laughs. "Taking things that dont belong to us" got a lot of oooooo's. I got a laugh outta that one.
Kendra's "FIYERO" and Julia's "FIYERO" 's were really off. There was almost a 3 second pause in between them. My thought on NGD as basically the same as DG. Julia's sick and they are both vocally extremely demanding. She tries to get around that but it really didn't do her very much good. The point is she tried. Her high and demanding notes were flemmy and forced. That's all I'm gonna say about it.
MOTWH was normal. Alma had a pretty good turning point with Kendra. Intense. Ensemble was pretty great.
I'm getting lazy with this review but here is the end summary. For Good and the scene before were funny and sentimental. The jokes were done well and the song was great. Not as emotional as I would like it to be but good for what the show was today. The end was good. Loved the ending of course. Kendra's end speech was done well. The "opening" at the end was normal. Julia's voice kinda got deeper. It sounded like she really broke character and was just herself for the last few lines but it's the end. What are you gonna do?

Overview:
Julia: Good acting, okay singing due to laryngitus and viral infection. Voice was kind of nasal. Almost sounded more like a Glinda to me. You never know what you may see in the future...
Kendra: Not the best, not the worst. Liked her. Wished she was vocally stronger but loved her popular and perkiness.
Sebastion: STAR of the show. Best actor, singer, all of the above. Can't wait to see him in something that showcases him more.
Alma: Good. Knows when to play the role evil and when to keep in on the DL.
P.J: Good wizard. Nothing too special but definitely one of the better ones.
Jennifer: Definite star quality. Love her voice and her acting. Want to see more of her in a more demanding role.
K. Todd: Nothing special.
Kirk: Not an especially good Boq. Other's are better.

Show in general: Not the best performace. Looking forward to lottoing later in the run and hopefully witnessing a better performance. On an A to F grading scale, I'd say B+.

Hi all! If you missed this performance, idina-here.com has uploaded it to their video page! It is Idina Menzel and Trisha Yearwood (why?) singing FOR GOOD.

It's interesting! Idina puts her own twist on it, and even sings (what's written for) Glinda's part at the end.

Ok... I'm calmly writing this!

I'm seeing the premiere of Wicked in Detroit next week (at first I was only seeing it June 11th) because the Detroit News had a contest to win Wicked tickets (write an "untold story" for a fictional character) ... and I WON. And I'm freaking out. I also get a backstage tour & free merchandise.

I've never seen Wicked yet so I'm completely excited and freaking out.

:) :) :) :)

And I'll get to see Julia Murney as Elphaba! (The June 11 tickets were for a matinee!)

Oh my gosh, you guys.

SQUEE.
